COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, April 5, KHS held its first Shelter Slumber Pawty—supporters live streamed 'pawting' with shelter residents to raise funds and awareness for community animals. Over $4,400 was raised toward a $10,000 goal as local animal lovers joined the international event.  KSN
  • Volunteers in Newton painted eight front doors on March 29 as part of the project Let's Paint the Town through Peace Connection+ funded by a NetWork Kansas Community Solutions grant targeting 40 doors to refresh home exteriors. The project will continue next weekend for any neighbor who wants a fresh look for their home.  KWCH
  • Saturday afternoon, protesters gathered outside the Historic Courthouse in downtown Wichita as part of the nationwide 'Hands Off' movement calling for stronger American rights. More than 1,400 protests took place across every state and overseas by pro-democracy advocates in response to what they say is an attack on freedoms.  KSN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local nonprofit ICT Trees, Inc. will distribute 66 free trees, mulch, and planting instructions to registered homeowners in selected Wichita neighborhoods at Murdock Park on Saturday, April 12. The initiative targets areas with fewer trees—identified by a NASA heat island study—to help lower energy costs and cool neighborhoods.  KSN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Saturday afternoon, protesters gathered at the Historic Courthouse in downtown Wichita as part of the nationwide Hands Off movement—over 1,700 locals were present along the streets from City Hall to the Love Downtown YMCA. The demonstration, organized by Leading Kansas, aimed to urge state leaders to address federal cuts affecting education, social security, and veterans’ services.  KSN

  • Carla Bernat Escuder, a Kansas State senior from Spain, won the Augusta National Women’s Amateur with a 4-under 68—coming from two shots behind after a clutch flop shot on no. 10 saved par. Defending champion Lottie Woad struggled with a double bogey on no. 10 and finished 72.  KWCH
