CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The Wichita Police Department reported on Friday that violent and property crimes dropped significantly through March, with murder cases falling 73% from last year to three in 2025 + property crimes down at least 20%. KWCH
- ➤ An 800-pound cannon—captured in Cuba and installed as part of Wichita’s Spanish-American War Memorial—disappeared from Central Riverside Park on Wednesday morning and was later found damaged near N. Woodland when police arrested a 37-year-old suspect on charges of felony theft and vandalism. KNSS
- ➤ Police investigated a shooting on Wichita’s east side Friday night near a hotel at 37th and Rock Road—two people were taken to the hospital, with one in critical condition and the other with minor injuries—officials said. KSN

- ➤ Sedgwick County will host a free tire collection event from April 10-12 at the West Yard (4701 S. West St.) where residents, farmers and local government officials can drop off up to 50 tires per person from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day; business tires will not be accepted and residents are advised to wait until Friday or Saturday while farmers and government officials drop off on Thursday. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, the Wichita City Council is expected to approve $125,000 for cancer screenings for residents near 29th and Grove—Sedgwick County had approved a matching amount two months ago while the state and Kansas Health Foundation will add $3 million. The council will also consider $1.6 million to design three new fire stations for Central and Elder and Lincoln and Rock with a contractor for the Pawnee and Maize station to be selected later this year. KWCH
- ➤ Residents in McPherson may hear sounds like fireworks while a resident uses a Bird Banger (an orange handheld pistol that fires pyrotechnics) to move turkey vultures from trees; the process will start Friday night and continue for the next 10–14 nights at sunset, and police said the resident will call dispatch (to alert neighbors) before each use. - ➤ The Sedgwick County Health Department is holding a walk-in measles vaccine clinic at 1900 E. 9th Street this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—even though no measles cases have been confirmed locally, reports note 24 cases in Kansas. KWCH
