ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • One person died in a crash on northbound I-135 near 29th Street North and Hydraulic just before 6 a.m. on April 1—traffic continued as the right two lanes remained closed while crews investigated the scene.  KSN

  • Kansas Gas Service is offering free trees to Kansans who pledge to call 811 before digging—this offer, part of the Dig Hero Tree Giveaway with the Arbor Day Foundation, promotes safe digging practices to prevent underground utility damage and outages.  KSN

CRIME NEWS

  • A Kansas airman pleaded guilty to three domestic violence charges in military court and received 12 months confinement—he was demoted from Technical Sergeant to Airman Basic after incidents with two former girlfriends in Wichita and Hutchinson.  KWCH

CULTURE NEWS

  • Left on Read in downtown Wichita is a new bookstore that highlights books by and about people of color—owner Latasha Eley Kelly said the shop was founded to give voice to authors who are often overlooked. Kelly plans to start a book club soon and welcomes readers from all backgrounds who want to learn about diverse authors.  The Voice

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Kansas Department of Revenue said Kansas collected $636.9 million in March — $13.6 million less than expected and 16.2% lower than March 2024. A group that includes KDOR, the Division of Budget and economists from local universities will meet on April 17 to review fall numbers.  KSN
  • Sedgwick County Emergency Management wrapped up the Storm Fury on the Plains classes in Cheney (organized by the National Weather Service) to teach Kansans essential safety tips for thunderstorms, hail and tornadoes as April’s severe weather season begins.  FOX Kansas

  • Wichita home builders warned that if Canada adds a 25% tariff to the current 14.5% on softwood lumber, home construction costs will rise — putting pressure on the tight local housing market.  KSN
