BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Renata’s Garden—a mobile plant shop in a renovated school bus—travels around Wichita and nearby counties including Butler, Marion, Harvey, and Sedgwick to bring a curated selection of plants and plant-themed merchandise to local residents. The business began as a high school project and now partners with local organizations for pop-up events. KWCH
- ➤ Wichita's Towne West Mall has been rezoned from commercial to industrial, opening the door for out-of-town developers to propose new investments and improvements — the planning commission met with developers who explained their plans while some locals expressed concerns over traffic and a continuing homeless presence. This change sets the stage for future redevelopment aimed at revitalizing the area. FOX Kansas
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A federal judge rejected a motion to dismiss three civil lawsuits brought by the Marion County Record publisher, a reporter and an office manager after police raided the newspaper office and two homes over 19 months ago — the ruling allows discovery and depositions to begin. KWCH
- ➤ A court document shows that on March 16 just after midnight a 7-year-old boy was shot and killed near E. Ross Parkway when children said a gun from a purse was fired during a party where adults were drinking—police arrested 25-year-old Tasha Dillard, who now faces first-degree murder and six counts of aggravated child endangerment. - ➤ Kansas’ only women’s prison in Topeka is nearing full capacity as the number of women in custody begins to rise again after a slowdown during the pandemic. The Kansas Sentencing Commission projects the prison will hit full capacity by 2026 — the increase is slower than expected due to 75 fewer sentences last year and delays from a lawyer shortage. KWCH
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The film Sod & Stubble premiered in downtown Wichita this past weekend and was partially filmed in Cowtown in 2023 to capture local western roots. It is based on a popular 1930s biography about the hardships of the 1800s. FOX Kansas
