- ➤ A court document shows that on March 16 just after midnight a 7-year-old boy was shot and killed near E. Ross Parkway when children said a gun from a purse was fired during a party where adults were drinking—police arrested 25-year-old Tasha Dillard, who now faces first-degree murder and six counts of aggravated child endangerment. - ➤ Kansas’ only women’s prison in Topeka is nearing full capacity as the number of women in custody begins to rise again after a slowdown during the pandemic. The Kansas Sentencing Commission projects the prison will hit full capacity by 2026 — the increase is slower than expected due to 75 fewer sentences last year and delays from a lawyer shortage. KWCH

- ➤ Today, the Wichita Fire Department is enforcing Kansas’ ban on open burning in Sedgwick County, which stops burning trees, brush, crop residues and construction debris until after May 1 — a measure aimed at lowering ozone levels from agricultural fires. Exempt activities include outdoor cooking, ceremonial fires and burns for land management. KNSS
- ➤ Today, the City Council discusses adding the Crown Uptown Dinner Theater building to the Wichita Register of Historic Places after the owner considered demolition following a denied expansion request—Mayor Lily Wu called the move unprecedented while Maor Wu raised concerns on property rights. The Council will also review a proposal to buy and upgrade the building at 332 north Riverview with a one million dollar project. KNSS
