COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On March 13, 35 years ago, a powerful tornado known as the Hesston Tornado swept through areas in Reno and Harvey counties north of Newton — it killed a six-year-old boy in Burrton and a woman near Goessel, damaged over 200 homes and 21 businesses, and caused nearly $25 million in damage.  KWCH

CRIME NEWS

  • A mother is seeking answers after Amanda Vinardi, charged with child endangerment in connection with the death of her four month old son, walked out of a Wichita treatment center on March 4—police have issued a warrant as she remains at large.  KWCH
  • James Speer from Pawnee County was sentenced on Wednesday to life in prison without parole for raping an 8-year-old girl at a party — his prior convictions for child sex crimes led to his lifelong addition to the sex offender registry.  KWCH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Student Government Association at Wichita State discovered a $929,000 fee shortfall that is forcing funding cuts and a review of budgets for the upcoming years. The Senate will vote on the proposed cuts on March 26 as officials explain that miscalculations and lower international enrollment are behind the shortfall—raising concerns for future fee revenue.  The Sunflower

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials are discussing Wichita's drought restrictions as the growing season nears. Public Works Director Gary Janzen said the city is in Stage 2 with set days for watering but may shift to Stage 3 if dry conditions continue — a change that would further limit water usage.  KWCH
