COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Monday, the Sedgwick County Veterans Treatment Court held its first graduation at the courthouse, where veteran Khoa Nguyen completed the program to overcome substance use disorders and plans to mentor others as seven more veterans remain enrolled.  KWCH
  • City officials announced that renovations will improve safety and accessibility on the Redbud Trail for walkers + cyclists, with work planned for later this year. The upgrades were revealed on Feb. 10 to boost community recreation.  KWCH

CRIME NEWS

  • A Wichita roofer was fined and banned from working on Feb. 10 after inspectors discovered building code violations.  KWCH

CULTURE NEWS

  • Harold Miller broke barriers when he became the first Black air traffic controller at Mid-Continent Airport in 1970—he was recruited during his mail route and later served a 20-year career in aviation. This Black History Month, the military veteran is honored for overcoming discrimination and achieving his dream.  KWCH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two child abuse survivors are asking Kansas lawmakers to pass Erin's Law (HB 2576) that would require schools to teach body safety and abuse prevention once a year to help kids recognize dangerous behavior.  FOX Kansas

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A large grass fire that started Monday afternoon in Chautauqua County and spread into Elk County burned about 4,000 acres southeast of Longton and threatened several structures but spared homes—multiple fire divisions responded and cleared the fire by 7:45 p.m.  KWCH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service is offering storm safety classes in Wichita to show residents how to prepare for severe weather; sessions will be held soon at community centers with registration details posted online.  KWCH

SPORTS NEWS

  • Wichita State University men’s basketball team is offering discounted tickets for their home game against South Florida today & against Tulsa on Saturday to help fill Charles Koch Arena. The Shockers hope to move into first place in the AAC with strong fan support.  KWCH
