COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents can join a free guided bus tour of Black-owned businesses on Saturday, Feb. 28; the tour, organized by Tasha Hayes, will provide shuttle transportation, light refreshments, and stops in downtown, Old Town (and College Hill) with advance registration required to secure limited space.  The Voice
  • Saturday morning, Wichita State’s largest community service event brought over 130 volunteers together at 9 a.m. in the Rhatigan Student Center’s Beggs Ballroom, where students, alumni and faculty received breakfast and instructions before heading to 16 local sites (including Exploration Place and Shocker Support Locker) for community work.  The Sunflower

  • Bloom, a local flower shop, is preparing for Valentine’s Day by stocking Kansas-made flowers, chocolates and gifts. Owner Vanessa O’Brien advises customers to order early this week so they can enjoy their orders all week.  KWCH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wichita State Varsity Esports met with the SGA finance commission on Friday to outline its funding needs ahead of student fee hearings. Director Joseph Mazzara explained that past cuts have limited travel and event support for the team.  The Sunflower
  • Kindergarteners and first graders at Wichita schools received free books and stuffed animals on Monday from Wichita State Connect in partnership with Storytime Village (and WSU Athletics) during the annual Books and Bears event designed to spark early interest in reading.  KWCH
  • HB 2717 aims to lower the required school starting age from seven to six. The bill, introduced by Susan Estes, has bipartisan support and may prompt changes for Kansas parents.  FOX Kansas
  • On Feb. 9, the Andover school board approved a ban on cell phones for high school students, with the measure set to take effect next school term.  KWCH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A House bill introduced on Monday, Feb. 9 would require Kansas schools to teach Narcan use and fentanyl education. Lawmakers expect the proposal to boost student safety and emergency preparedness in classrooms.  KWCH

  • Today, Wichita golfers crowded city courses as temperatures climbed above 75°F after a long, snowy winter. Many are booking tee times early to enjoy these rare warm days.  KWCH
