COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wichita Animal Shelter installed a new microchip scanning station on Feb. 6 to help staff quickly scan pets for proper identification.  KWCH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Four Wichita middle schoolers will receive the Shine Girl Award at International Women’s Weekend next month, as Storytime Village announced the plans. Each school nominated a student for leadership and community contributions (one winner expressed surprise at being chosen).  KWCH
  • Wichita State students voiced varied reactions to a proposed minimum wage boost during campus discussions last night, with some hopeful about benefits for local workers and others expressing concerns over rising living costs. Their feedback has sparked a spirited debate among peers.  KWCH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • This week, Kansas lawmakers proposed raising the minimum wage from $7.25 to $16 in the statehouse, and Wichita State University students expressed mixed opinions + some support the boost while others warn that higher wages may drive up prices.  KWCH
  • Free parking remains in effect in Old Town and Delano after downtown parking fees began in July 2025. A local barista warned that if paid parking expands here — a plan not yet announced by the city — service workers and businesses might suffer.  KWCH
  • Evergy is warning its customers about a text scam that falsely claims refunds for overpaid bills and directs victims to a fake website + customers should delete the messages, avoid clicking links, and report any scams using Evergy’s online form.  KWCH
