COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Second and third graders from Honey Tree and Branches Academy visited Park West Plaza today to make Valentine crafts for seniors & build community bonds. They will return next month to present their science fair projects.  KWCH

CULTURE NEWS

  • Kanopolis Drive In secured funds to purchase a state-of-the-art 4K laser projector, making it the only drive-in theater in Kansas with this upgrade; funds came from local donations after a broken projector ended the season in October (the theater has been open since 1952).  KWCH
  • Musician Mike Coykendall will perform with fellow songwriters Freedy Johnston and Bill Goffrier in Wichita on Sunday, Feb. 8 as they trade songs and share stories about his early work with KMUW and his ongoing musical journey.  KMUW
  • Artist Amy Herrmann puts her new pastel and metallic ink pieces on display at Art House 310, opening Friday night. Her work draws on experience in frame shops and aircraft design plus adds depth and unique texture.  KMUW

  • Mychal Threets (known as Mychal the Librarian) will visit Wichita on Tuesday to promote his new children's book, I’m So Happy You’re Here, as part of his nationwide tour to celebrate library joy and encourage kids and families to enjoy local libraries.  KMUW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • KWCH meteorologists are preparing today’s early morning 4:30 a.m. forecast by reviewing previous shifts and analyzing models for Wichita and Salina. They celebrate National Weatherperson’s Day by highlighting the challenges of weather prediction (a reminder that the science is never 100% precise).  KWCH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chrysler announced a recall affecting over 450,000 vehicles + nearly 3,000 trailer modules due to a faulty brake light design that may reduce trailer visibility and lead to crashes. Affected owners will receive notice on March 24 and should visit local dealers for a free replacement.  KWCH

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Food and Drug Administration this week expanded its nationwide recall of Chips Ahoy! Baked Bites Brookie due to small corn starch clumps that may cause choking hazards for young children and seniors — consumers should check product packaging and avoid using affected items.  KWCH
  • Sedgwick County Zoo staff identified a wild bird with signs of HPAI and sent its samples for testing. The zoo increased its biosecurity protocols and temporarily closed the Australia (South America) walk-through habitat so flamingos, storks, cranes and penguins are less visible until more is learned.  KWCH

  • American luger Summer Britcher and biathlete Sean Doherty, both four-time Olympians, discussed their journey from teen athletes to top competitors and shared expectations for the upcoming 2026 Games in Milan + Cortina during an exclusive interview.  KWCH
  • Under coach Jen Pillich, the undefeated Wichita Heights girls basketball team is growing stronger with a 15-0 record & community support as they chase a Class 6A title. They will play Wichita South today before facing Wichita East on Feb. 20.  The Voice
  • The Wichita Wind Surge revealed its new alter ego on Feb. 5 at an unveiling event * a nod to its evolving identity *; the rebrand will be showcased at upcoming games to strengthen ties with local fans.  KWCH
