COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Children bundled up plunged down the snowy hill at Sedgwick County Park today + parents watched as they enjoyed a playful winter adventure, making the most of a rare snow day in the community.  KWCH
  • A community prayer for Flight 5342 is scheduled for Thursday. Local residents plus community leaders will gather at a designated venue to unite in support and healing as they remember the event.  KWCH

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The National Transportation Safety Board will vote on the probable cause of Flight 5342, which killed 67 people a year ago after 85 near misses, and will propose new safety recommendations in Washington D.C. this week.  KWCH
  • A 15-year-old in Newton got stuck in an uncovered drainage pipe while sledding at a closed golf course Saturday and was rescued by Newton Fire and EMS – a bystander’s call led to his prompt help.  KWCH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wichita State University received a $1 million gift from an anonymous 1958 graduate to fund need-based scholarships at the W. Frank Barton School of Business. The support benefits first-generation students facing financial challenges.  KWCH
  • School closed on (Monday, Jan. 26) due to (freezing temperatures) that made travel unsafe, giving kids an unexpected day off. Local parents said the break offered a brief pause in the winter routine.  KWCH
  • WSU’s Board of Trustees has approved a $38 million investment in University Stadium (formerly Cessna Stadium) to add a throwing area, widened soccer field, a nine-lane track, sprint warmup lanes, and a longer javelin runway following the 2026 state meet. Phase 2 renovations will begin after the state meet with completion planned by the 2028 meet.  The Sunflower
  • Sushi Do has replaced Fujisan in the Rhatigan Student Center after student surveys drove a switch to offer a wider range of dietary options. It serves sushi, poke bowls and rice bowls, with boba, ramen and udon coming Feb. 3 (operating hours: Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.).  The Sunflower

  • City employees and workers from Sunny Services have been working 12-hour shifts clearing snow from parking lots at Walmart and around Wichita after a heavy winter storm – their teamwork is keeping roads open.  FOX Kansas

HEALTH NEWS

  • Fire officials warn children to avoid playing on frozen ponds as recent snow makes the ice unsafe. The Andover Fire Department said warm sunlight can soften the surface — causing cracks that heighten the risk of serious injury.  KWCH
